SAVE THE DATE! On Tuesday evening (4/23) the Church Council voted to hold a Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday June 2, 2024 immediately following the 10:15AM worship service. The meeting will focus on the following three issues:
‘The Chosen,’ is a video series that "is a historical drama based on the life of Jesus and those who knew him. Set against the backdrop of Roman oppression in first-century Israel, the series shares an authentic look at Jesus' revolutionary life and teachings" (IMDB). It helps to visualize the story of Jesus.
You have an opportunity to see ‘The Chosen’ at Zion and then have an opportunity for discussion afterwards. We will watch in the Gathering Place (on the new 65" TV) and then have a chance to discuss afterwards. There will be two sessions, so hopefully one will fit your schedule. The sessions will be similar, but not identical, in terms of which episodes will be viewed and when. Wednesday Mornings at 10:00AM: May 1, May 8, May 15, May 22, May 29 Sunday Evenings at 6:00PM: April 28, May 5, May 19 Bring your own popcorn or snack. We will have the coffee on. Save the Date! Zion’s Annual Picnic will be Sunday, June 9th on the church grounds. Look for more details as the time gets closer!
SPRING CLEAN-UP / WORK DAY. scheduled for Saturday, April 27th has been postponed. We will let you know as soon as it is rescheduled.
Join Us for 'HIGH TEA' on Saturday, May 4th from 11:30AM-2:00PM. We will have a presentation from Bigelow Tea, live music, delicious “tea foods” & teas and wonderful fellowship! There will be a display of handmade shopping bags which will be available for purchase as well with proceeds going to the "Chris Messner Organ Fund." Look for the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place and sign up now! We need to get a headcount, so please sign-up now. Free-will offerings accepted.
HURRY! There's Only One More Week for the Coat Drive: Zion is happy to be a participating drop-off location for Southington Community Services’ “Operation Stay Warm 2024” There is a special ‘bin’ located in the Gathering Place where you can put new / gently used coats to be distributed to needy Southington residents. Coat Donations will be collected through the month of April and the contents of the bin will be collected weekly.
The May Book Club selection is “Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus” by Lois Tverberg. At our last meeting, we found ‘Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus’ to be insightful. It helped explain the Jewish culture, which in turn makes the meaning of God's and Jesus's words much clearer. This book will shed light on how these Middle Eastern people approached life, God, and each other. Lois Tverberg explains age-old imagery that we often misinterpret, allowing us to approach God and the stories and teachings of Scripture with new eyes.
A few books are available to purchase in the Gathering Place for $12. Our next meeting is Monday, May 20th at 7:00PM in the Gathering Place. Save the Date! Zion’s Annual Picnic will be Sunday, June 9th on the church grounds. Look for more details as the time gets closer!
We Will Be Receiving New Members during worship the service. If you are interested in becoming a member of Zion or have questions, please contact Pastor Jeff. Time for Fellowship: The Gathering Place lives up to its name on Sunday mornings as people gather around the tables for conversation, for coffee, and for snacks. It is a great way for people to get to know each other and for relationships to develop. It's all about the gathering of our community.
That said, the coffee and snacks are a great draw. We could use some more people to start the coffee, provide some snacks, and clean up afterwards. Maybe people who sit at the same table could even work together to make that happen. On the bulletin board in the kitchenette, there is a sheet that describes what you need to do to "host" Fellowship Time. So please take a look at that and see if it is something that you think you could do. Then sign up on the list that you will find on the bar in The Gathering Place. Healing Service: There is a healing service within the Saturday 4PM worship service. This occurs on the First Saturday of each month. The healing service will not replace the regular worship service, but will be a part of it. Mark your calendars now!
Friday Afternoon Fellowship Drop-In…Please Join Us! A few people have been meeting in the Gathering Space on the 1st and 3rd Friday afternoons from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. It began where people were bringing their needlework, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, etc. while we visited and learned from each other. Now that the weather is getting warmer and it’s staying light a bit longer, you might want to come and socialize. Bring along what you are working on if you’d like, or just come to get to know others. Hope to see you there!
Looking for Some Great Recipes for the New Year? How about a Zion Cookbook? Look on the table in the Gathering Place for more information. If you have already paid for your cookbook(s), pick yours up! If you would like to purchase a book at Zion, please write your name on the order list and place your payment in the red box in the Gathering Place. CLICK HERE for an order form if you'd like to purchase a copy and can't get to Zion. Call the office with questions.
Announcing the 'Christopher Messner New Organ Fund' Chris has had such a positive impact on Zion since he became our organist on April 26, 1992. He has filled this church with such beautiful music each and every week. He has been the one constant in our worship service and has helped us navigate through the many transitions we have experienced over these past 30 years. He's always open to new ideas and supports anyone who wants to add their talent to our worship service. One example is how ‘Bells and Blessings’ has become such an integral part of our Christmas season celebration and could not happen without his tireless effort. I can’t imagine all of the time he must spend learning music for everyone, recording music for people to practice and just working with them to find a song.
We sometimes take things for granted, but ever since that Easter Sunday well over 5 years ago, when the organ stopped playing right in the middle of the service, and we found out that spare parts were hard to come by, we have worried about the longevity of this organ. In order to honor Chris, we have established the ‘Christopher Messner New Organ Fund’ to begin a campaign for a replacement organ. Once the funds are raised and the organ is purchased and set in place, it will be dedicated to Chris for all of the beautiful music he has filled this church with over these past 30 years and for how much he means to our Zion Family. Please donate if you can. Click here to donate, or If you prefer to donate by check,, please make sure to put “organ fund” in the memo line on your check. Thank you! If you would like some help following the order of worship, ask an usher for a three-ring notebook. In it, you will find the order of worship for the season of Lent. You will still need to look in the Bible for the readings and the hymnal for the hymns. We hope these help!
